i’ve been feelin’ the heat of the summer, the passion of the sun, and just a little extra frisky lately…
makes me think of summer romance… since it is the summer solstice and all 😉
this was one romantic night in ol’ nyc…

the temps were absolutely perfect last week – 70-80 degrees during the day and cool nights that require only a light sweater, but flip flops are comfortable. the smell of the grill lingers in the air, the frangrance from the various blooms waft from every angle, the sun is warm, the air is warm, the days are long… and that means i take lots of little walks.

so – right around this time of year – and i think once again near the winter, the sun is positioned just right in the sky, and at sunset – it passes through the main strips in manhattan {14th street, 34th street, 42nd street}, illuminating the streets and causing intense building shadows and traffic to literally stop.
i had heard of this event thanks to my friend anthony. it is aptly referred to as, “manhattan henge” {like stonehenge} because it does create this fantastic contrast and to be frank, it’s not often the city gets that drenched with light, so people flock to it!

i can’t take the credit for originality on this, however – i’m a huge rachael ray fan… and she had this on her show a few weeks ago and i was uber excited to have company over so i could test it out. i think i pretty much insisted my brother come by for a visit, mostly to force him to drink my concoction 🙂

i mean, seriously – nothing says summer in new york like a trip to coney island in brooklyn. a dear friend and follower of the blog, anthony, took me to the coney island circus one time. it was one of my only trips to coney island, since it was quite a hike from where i lived in manhattan. there’s such an old charm about that place. the games, the “carnival” feel, the boardwalk, the old rides, etc. so much history. anthony is a superb tour-guide, he told me and showed me so many great little secrets hiding in that great city.

food can be fun.
i love it when i see a recipe or look at a vegetable a different way and say, “what if i tried it like this…” because typically, i’m a creature of habit. when i find something that works for me, i stick with it. i often don’t sway. in fact, i had been using the same ranch dressing for like, 7 years. annies organic cowgirl ranch. i love the stuff. but then one day a co-worker suggested this other brand {with less fat, made from yogurt, and still so tasty} and now THAT is my new favourite – haha. i guess my point is, sometimes i get tunnel vision. but this blog has helped me to rethink ways of preparing food. i always chop my veggies into 1-2 inch pieces, and steam them or saute them. sometimes i’ll roast them all together. but never did it occur to me to cut zucchini into strips and serve it like a pizza slice!! what! so, it was kind of weird having 4th of july on a wednesday, no? granted, i’m on a glorious 3-week long {2.5 weeks left} staycation, so it didn’t much matter to me this year. though, i will say this is probably the first holiday i’ve had off from work in probably a decade. working retail hours doesn’t typically allow me to get time off during any fun holiday.
but i feel like it’s weird because it’s like, when did you celebrate? or are you celebrating this weekend? are people still busting out festivities?! i sure am – i plan on grilling some vidalia onions and corn on the cob tonight!
but since i’m taking some time off, i’ve been doing my best to really relax, submerse myself in some social activities, and just kick back- cuz it’s summah-time {summer summer summer time… summertime} 😉 Continue reading

it’s a special occasion, splurge a little! that whole mentality goes along with my “intuitive eating” lifestyle. granted, i seldom even buy white flour-based anything, let alone white sugar cookies – but i made these to share. i had one at home to make sure they didn’t suck, and one at the party… and that was all i needed… for now 🙂
nothing says summer to me quite like watermelon. when in its seasonal prime – flavourful, juicy, fresh, delicious watermelon.
whole foods market had a one day sale – 2/$5 on these organic beauties. and i bought four. this is my last one, and i’m eating it today to celebrate summer! i bought a little melon baller, which i think is just so fun for precisely this reason 🙂 — and – way easier!! Continue reading
