{wordy wednesday} — leaves of change
5 Sepi have seriously been sitting at my computer all morning – i started 3 different blogs, got distracted, ate breakfast, cried a little {good cry}, and then started all over. i blame nicki minaj. i have been listening to the song “fly” on repeat since i woke up. it’s my new theme song. my favourite lyrics :
“Everybody wanna try to box me in
Suffocating every time it locks me in
Paint their own pictures then they crop me in
But I will remain where the top begins
Cause I am not a word, I am not a line
I am not a girl that can ever be defined
I am not fly, I am levitation
I represent an entire generation…” Continue reading

{travel tuesday} — a walk across the williamsburg bridge
4 Sepabout 2 weeks before i left new york city, a friend suggested we take a walk across the williamsburg bridge. “how often will you get to walk across bridges once you leave?!” she said, convincing me to go. i didn’t need a whole ton of convincing; though at the time i remember feeling really ready to leave new york, and it was hard to drag me out of the house at times… funny how that works, because now i miss the heck out of it! good thing i’m going back for a visit…
there are many messages throughout new york city – stickers, graffiti, signs, posters, strangers yelling things at you, etc.
the williamsburg bridge is no exception. in fact, i dare to say it boasts the most messages of any place i’ve visited in the big apple. i mean, the entire bridge is like a graffiti art gallery. every inch of it is covered with something to see or read. my camera got quite the workout… Continue reading
{foto friday} — it’s a blue moon!
31 Auga blue moon occurs when there are TWO full moons in one month. we had a full moon on august 1st – {uhm, only the most emotional full moon i’ve been through to date} – and now this evening, we will have another full moon. it will technically be full in the wee hours of the night, but it ought to be quite the display in the big sky. last night after i watered the garden, i looked up and saw it. i ran in to grab my camera, got distracted by my cute cat, only to come back to see that the moon was hiding behind some clouds. some COOL clouds!
i work late tonight, so i probably won’t have time to take photos of the full moon, but i thought i’d share these images from last night – as i precariously stood on a patio chair, nervously gripping my neighbour’s fence in hopes of not falling or shaking too much. shooting at 1600 ISO is NOT my favourite thing ever. but, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to get some good shots… Continue reading
{wordless wednesday} – opportunity knocks
29 Augi ran out of time to rant and rave this week. so how about NO words, and my favourite fotographic subjects, instead?!
🙂
{foto friday} — east village radio
24 Augeast village radio. classic.
one of my former co-workers DJed at this spot once a week. you can listen live to streaming music on their website. DJs share a small booth right in manhattan’s lower east side and take up about a 2-hour slot, which varies. my buddy JW likes to spin old-school jams like boyz to men, heavy D, bel biv devoe — take ya back.
one day after work, JW and i were leaving at the same time and he asked if i wanted to come along, since i had my camera at work that day. heck yes, i’ll snap some photos and sip a red stripe while i listen and watch you play with some old records. sounds awesome! Continue reading
{travel tuesday} – a sunset in carmel, california
21 Augwhat an absolutely stunning place – carmel, california. monterey bay is equally as beautiful – they are almost one in the same.
years ago, when i was in college, i went to visit my dad in san jose, california – also beautiful, and also will be a blog post at some point – and i took lots and lots of drives along the pacific. only twice now have i ever been to that region… but i tried to soak up as much as possible with each visit – particularly this time since i was studying fotography and wanted to use these images for my portfolio. and i did – this one :
i am so thankful i got to visit this wonderful place… i miss the ocean a lot since moving back to colorado. i’ve always been so drawn to it, to the water. i love the sound of the waves, the smell of the ocean air, the breeze from off the shoreline… mmm, i miss it. the pacific ocean is pretty different than the atlantic, though… and i’m way more used to the atlantic. if i remember correctly, i was surprised at how much cooler the water temps in the pacific were…
i digress.
here are some shots from that brisk may sunset in carmel : Continue reading
{foto friday} – the time i watched a praying mantis bathe herself…
17 Augthis was hands-down, one of the coolest things i’ve ever witnessed with my own eyes.
this post is kind of wordy – as i tend to be when i write. get me in front of people for a speech?! pffssthh, forget it. i’m a hott mess. but writing — now, writing i can do!
—
last year – around this time, a little later – i’ll say late september… i found a pregnant praying mantis on our front porch, just hanging out in the honeysuckle bush my roommate has planted by the kitchen window. i about fell over. i’ve had a total fascination with these neat little creatures my whole life… i never really understood what the draw to them was, but last year when i saw one i did a little research. there are lots of different opinions and thoughts as to their symbolism. they are said to bring stillness, sense of peace, and more internalized thinking. because they are so mindful about their every move, the mantis is known in some parts of the world as being very spiritual and she is looked upon as almost a meditation resource. i thought i read somewhere that they can also represent death… a surrender, a letting go, etc. and ironically enough, i lost my grandmother about 2 months after i saw that praying mantis last year. {travel tuesday} – atop the metropolitan museum of art, NYC
14 Augthis was hands-down one of the most romantic nights of my life to date…
the weather was perfect. i believe it was right around this time of year… i was on one of the best dates i’ve ever been on in my life — and it started with an amazing dinner at an amazing restaurant – i remember using the word “enamored” several times to describe the food…
then we went to an exhibit on top of the metropolitan museum of art… it was incredible… the view was something like this : Continue reading
{foto friday} – my blog “assistants” and some farm fresh eggs
10 Augmeet my cats :
ferris bueller loves to help out in the kitchen. and by help out i mean – get totally in the way and make me always almost step on him and spill stuff… but he’s got so much personality! super chatty, and no doubt a gemini, just like his owner – my roomie.
callegurl loves to hang in the “studio” and make sure lighting is taken care of and she also provides the cute factor, which she has perfected exceedingly well. she is most likely a scorpio or cancer, very emotional, independent, and kind of hard to tie down, just like her owner – me. {travel tuesday} – the famous brooklyn bridge
7 Augthe BB was always a place i would take visitors. for one, it’s just classic cool. for two, it’s great exercise to walk it. and for three, it was close to my apartment.
these photos are from two different visits to the brooklyn bridge. both times i walked the entire length of the bridge into brooklyn from downtown manhattan. it’s a great walk, a cool chance to see so much of both boroughs from a unique perspective. a lot of times, when i had a guest in town – i’d show them the brooklyn bridge, then i’d take them across the staten island ferry, for a chance to see even more of the city from another perspective. i’ve probably walked the brooklyn bridge at lease half a dozen times now…
so, without further ado, here are some photos for travel tuesday… another snippet from my life in new york : Continue reading
foto friday – manhattan henge
27 Julso – right around this time of year – and i think once again near the winter, the sun is positioned just right in the sky, and at sunset – it passes through the main strips in manhattan {14th street, 34th street, 42nd street}, illuminating the streets and causing intense building shadows and traffic to literally stop.
i had heard of this event thanks to my friend anthony. it is aptly referred to as, “manhattan henge” {like stonehenge} because it does create this fantastic contrast and to be frank, it’s not often the city gets that drenched with light, so people flock to it!
i set out on the M15 bus uptown and stopped at 42nd street on the east side and started walking west… Continue reading
travel tuesday – flying over the island
24 Juldepending on which airport you fly into in new york, where you are flying from, and the time of day – one can get the coolest view of the city from above – a rare opportunity to look at the entire scope of new york city, and almost catch a glimpse at all 5 boroughs…
i love this photo because you can see my old apartment to the right, just past the bridge…
{the foto} missing coney island
18 Juli mean, seriously – nothing says summer in new york like a trip to coney island in brooklyn. a dear friend and follower of the blog, anthony, took me to the coney island circus one time. it was one of my only trips to coney island, since it was quite a hike from where i lived in manhattan. there’s such an old charm about that place. the games, the “carnival” feel, the boardwalk, the old rides, etc. so much history. anthony is a superb tour-guide, he told me and showed me so many great little secrets hiding in that great city.
a few of my favourite captures from that day : Continue reading
{palate pleasing padron peppers}
13 Julthat was fun.
and as we all know, i love to try new things. so, i saw these little pretty peppers hanging out in the produce section one day and i immediately snagged them up, got on my phone and googled how to make them!
{the foto} i made it here – i can make it anywhere.
10 Julyou really changed me, new york! Continue reading
