sooooo – my stats have suddenly started dropping lately. i don’t really want to focus on it too much, but i find it odd that out of nowhere, i’m getting less and less “likes” when for a good while there i was getting more and more and people were finding and following my blog… i just find it odd… any insight you all may have is appreciated.
meanwhile, i’m going to keep writing amazing blogs. i love doing it for me, but i also do this as i hope to inspire others to try new foods and recipes and to create their own! food is fun.
this blog is about another specialty cheese that i discovered at whole foods market a couple weeks ago called balsamic bellavitano. it is one of the most delicious cheeses i’ve ever had – and i’ve tried a lot of cheeses! this is a reserve cheese with a little nuttiness and hints of fruit in the flavour. i love how they wrap it in special paper…
… just makes it so fun to open up 🙂 Continue reading
hi friends. i’ve missed you…
i don’t really have an amazing story to explain my absence as of late… sometimes i randomly take a little time off from blogging to adjust to the ever-changing events life can throw at us… i hope you are enjoying the sun and had a nice kick-off to summer — grilled up some BBQ, got in the pool, graduated, and/or all of the above!
anyway, i’ve been “metaphorically” shedding layers and such for a few months now… going through a lot of change in A LOT of ways!… but when i started seeing little balls of wadded up hair begin to overtake my carpet, i knew something had to be done…
i love my kitty, callee… she is beautiful.
and sweet and squishy and a plethora of other things… and i’m fairly certain she is a norwegian forest cat… i’m not totally sure because she is a rescue and was abandoned {so sad!} and so the pound did not know much about her… but the point is, she has a LOT of hair!! and it’s that time of year when they begin to shed like crazy – thus the hairballs all over the carpet…
i decided to give my cutie callee a brushing the other day… check it out : Continue reading
i mean, i don’t miss waking up for them, per se… but i miss their beauty, their diversity, their colours, their peace…
every morning for about 4 months i got up and fotographed the sunrise. my schedule at work began to change so i stopped doing it… i’m sort of missing them right now because colorado has some of the coolest skies!
it’s artichoke season!!!
and thank goodness for that!!!! i wrote a blog or two about them last spring… i just love these beautiful babies. although they do take an awful lot of work to prepare for such a little amount of actual flesh… it’s SO worth it – the scrumptiousness waiting inside doesn’t quite compare to any other…
it got me thinking about how artichokes are kind of like us, like humans…
i know you may be chuckling thinking how the heck can i be like a green pokey vegetable?! well… the way i see it –
an artichoke looks like a flower.
just like us 🙂 Continue reading
happy mother’s day, judi!
i miss you more than there are words for. i celebrate who you were as my mother every day. on your anniversary this year, i was strong – no tears… i even went to work – i smiled and thought of your smile all day. but this week has been rough. i couldn’t figure out why my emotions have been so high… sometimes it just hits me, yanno?! i miss you more than ever, it seems. i’m a “big girl” now, and all i want is my mommy. i want to ask your advice, introduce you to people i meet, have lunch with you, buy you sweaters and scarves, make you smoothies, paint your fingernails, and brush your hair for you. i also miss giving you back-scratches. i know i always complained about doing that for you, but i would do it as my full time job now if i could – and nothing seemed to make me fall asleep like a back-scratch from you… i miss the littlest things. i don’t wallow in sadness when i miss you… i mean, it hurts – they lie when it says it gets easier with time… it actually gets harder, one just finds ways to cope. but i do find that some moments are extraordinarily harder than others…
i always say your death was “bittersweet” because i just can’t find another word to help me accept that it happened. even 20 years later – i don’t know who i’d be if it didn’t happen, and i don’t know how happy or healthy you would’ve been if it didn’t… so all i can really do is be extra grateful that YOU were my mother in this lifetime. that for 13 glorious years, you were the one tucking me in at night and making silly “bear” faces in the car on roadtrips to visit family. all i can do each year on mother’s day is remember the wonderful things you did for me as my mother.
i’ll close with a few of the reasons and memories i have that made you the best mom ever : Continue reading
if i stop and pay attention – i notice that love follows me everywhere i go.
the most interesting things seem to form themselves into a heart…
like chipped paint on a wall…
lots of heart-shaped rocks… Continue reading
i’m reminiscing about brisk spring foto shoots in central park like the one with this beautiful couple from singapore…
cherry blossoms just reek of spring – quite literally! 😉
and i think we are finally entering spring here in colorado – even though it’s doubtful i’ll see any of these here! warmer temps are expected for our weekend, though – and i look forward to going for a walk by the lake, working in the garden, and having a smoothie outside on the patio. i hope yours is filled with warmer temps also – among other delicious things!
i mean, in a way i always will miss new york. there’s just no place on earth quite like it… and i miss all the cool doors i would always see…
do you know what a grain elevator is?! i didn’t until the time i was visiting indiana, fotographing a wedding… a very special wedding. my cousin, M married his lady, E and and her family has a farm – they are bonafide farmers! experiencing their farm first hand was such an absolute joy! mister T is one proud owner, and he knows his farm in and out. from hydraulic garage doors to magic hoses to ceiling snow, the place is just loaded with charm that encourage memories for years.
as i said yesterday, one of my favourite moments of all time was spent on this farm on that wonderfully warm midwest day in mid may. the rain came crashing down out of nowhere, but the sun didn’t have time to really leave so the air had that yummy glare to it that you just knew was going to create the most amazing rainbow once the clouds parted…
double rainbow!
my biggest fan anthony wanted to know the story behind yesterday’s “favourtie moment” shot. here it is. i walked through “attic winter wonderland” i called it – insulated craziness balance-beamed between one world and the next… we get to the end and mister T tells me to turn left and “climb in”… essentially, i am inside this box, just on the other side…
see that little box? i’m in one just like it… i’m just on the other side of the barn. 🙂 so after we got out of this barn, we walked over to the grain elevator. i was beyond scared, but also knew i really wanted to do this…
the grain elevator i walked up looks nothing like the ones in the wikipedia fotos… this was basically a giant ladder… and i kind of have this phobia of heights, and also a phobia of ladders – so this was a big feat for me! Continue reading
i love this foto mostly because it totally evokes so many emotions for me — i remember this day so well… and i can be whisked away to exactly this moment in time again when i look at this foto… i can just close my eyes, and i’m there…
the pleasing aroma of the rain, the sound of it dancing on the rooftop above my head, the glare from the determined sun somehow still shining through it…
it was a very magical experience, this moment… and i had a camera with me!
🙂
as an astrology-loving-portrait-photographer, i always say geminis are my favourite to play with. they give me so many different looks! the lovely gem, AJ, still goes down as one of my favourite models to get in front of my lense… and she feels the same way about being being in front of it!
i never have to give miss A any direction… she always knows where the camera is…
and they have quite the romance going on!…
she’s so fun and flirty… Continue reading
how cool is the stove in my new apartment?! i don’t even own a microwave, so this is nothing short of utter awesomeness…
so retro… so classic…
complete with a sweet back-light!…
i mean, a gas range is pretty righteous anyway, but ya throw in some old-school style and that totally amazing light and what! – PLUS, not only do i have a sweet stove-oven, but that’s a toaster oven on top… so, i suppose i should start perfecting my baking skills…
have a great weekend!
today is food and foto dot com’s first birthday! woohoo! i’m making my favourite snack, amazeballs, in celebration and instead of cake. 🙂
on this day in 2012, i created a wordpress website and turned it into a dot com. food and foto was created with the idea of educating readers on healthy eating options as well as sharing my passion for fotography. it has since molded into a collaboration of recipes, ramblings, and images from my canon. with over 220 posts, i must say this blog has transformed into such a fun and healthy outlet for me to share the things i love most. i am humbled by the amount of support from the wordpress community, and i am honoured to have as many followers as i do. my dream is to see this blog transform into a lifestyle blog that inspires people to create. i enjoy cooking and sharing recipes, but i also enjoy sharing information about overall health and wellness… and living a simple life. and since i’ve become rather good at manifesting, i’ll just throw this out there –
my dream is to make this my FULL TIME JOB! and it can happen!
and so, now i am brainstorming new ways to tailor this blog into something slightly different. i like consistency, but i am also a huge proponent for change and i think it’s important to keep things fresh. so i’m working behind the scenes over the next few days, coming up with new ideas for this ever-growing blog, food and foto dot com.
let’s reflect for a moment, shall we?
i believe i’ve come a long way since my first post…
and in case you missed it, here’s my first recipe blogpost…
one of the most delicious recipes i created was this…
although – it has a very close tie with this…
okay, you may want to try this, and this, and this, too…
alright – and no doubt, you may want to throw a party just to make these…
one of my favourite blogs i’ve ever written is right here…
and speaking of cleansing, people always ask about my 5-day DIY version…
but don’t get me wrong, i’ll put away about a dozen of these, as well…
it’s all about balance, really. balance, and this…
i also sometimes get all philosophical and talk about stuff like this…
and don’t forget – i do a lot of other things with my camera – see?!
i want to thank you ALL from the depths of my soul for being an avid reader, for following and taking time to comment, and for making me really feel like part of a community! you are my muse, the reason{s} i keep this up, the fire i need to stay inspired. YOU, my faithful readers — you know i do this for you, right?! i do it for me because i love it, but i do it for you because you appreciate it.
so, HAPPY BIRTHDAY FOOD AND FOTO!
here’s to many many more years of health, food, and fotos! xxoo
even though i REALLY don’t want to, i’m taking a little time off from blogging to get acquainted with my new kitchen and attached apartment 😉
also doing a lot of self-reflecting and working on a way to celebrate foodandfoto.com’s first birthday this month! i am considering making a few changes around here as well, so stay tuned.
wishing you all a wonderful day, week, and weekend! xxoo
a friend of mine posted some testimonials on her blog recently… and a couple of them were so touching that it got me thinking about just how much of a difference it makes for me as an artist when someone truly appreciates what it is i do. we ALL feel that way, no doubt – about whatever it is we do that people notice, appreciate, and respect.
the more i fine-tune what it is i am best at and the more i discover who i sincerely am, the more i realize that when we are ALL able to truly be ourselves, with no judgement or fear of rejection, the more we can ALL do what we do best and be mutually respected, appreciated, and noticed for it.
having said all that, i was inspired to share my favourite testimonial someone once wrote for me. i had the pleasure of working with this lovely man on a brisk fall romp through lower manhattan. we shot over 500 photos and about a dozen wardrobe changes in 3 hours. david homyk is a true gentleman, a doll. hilarious and charming, open and endearing. we worked on several images for an online magazine story about david’s music. he has since gone on to do such amazing things with his career and i am just honoured to have had the pleasure of creating some amazing editorial portraits with him. and i mean, it’s not just because he’s a total babe :
“leave it to audrey, she is a master at capturing the authenticity of the moment where the human spirit is available in its entirety…”
– david homyk, singer/songwriter/model/actor, new york city Continue reading
