{travel tuesday} — a little garden in the big apple

25 Sep

what i loved about living in the lower east side of manhattan was that all i had to do to “get out” and feel like i left the city was take a short walk. within a few blocks i would stumble onto things like this – little treasures.  a cute little park in a big apple city like new york.  a place of serenity in the concrete jungle.  i just love it.

this little park was somewhere along 17th street, most likely in alphabet city, where i found a lot of little hidden parks…

this was hanging along the fence…

{foto friday} — for the love of figs.

21 Sep

i’m pretty sure it’s fig season..

and i love me some figs… just love ’em…

i decided to try ALL THREE kinds of figs this year… even though i have always heard that black mission figs are the best… i wanted to give them all a fair chance and then decide for myself… i had only had the black figs prior to this little experiment… Continue reading

{foto friday} – the empire state building, at night, and in the rain

14 Sep

these fotos are kind of old, back when i had just moved to new york – i’d been there maybe a year. and they were taken sans tripod.  i think it was in september – i didn’t anticipate the weather being as cold as it was. but did you know humidity works in the cool temps?!  holy crap yes it does!

i had some guests in town from colorado and they wanted to squeeze in as much tourism as possible.  the empire state building was always a go-to for me when i had visitors.  it never gets old for me.  even though i don’t like the heights, i like the view.  i took another trip up during the daytime with a friend, i’ll have to find those fotos.  will i pay 30 bucks and visit again when i am in the city in october?  mmmmmaybe not.  we’ll see.  it’s nice to know people with rooftop views – that’s like prime real estate in new york! {whatever wednesday} — a repost; about how cool nature is.

12 Sep

so, i decided to change “wordy wednesday” to “whatever wednesday” — i just can’t put that kind of pressure on myself anymore – haha 😉

so, in honor of my first “whatever” post, i am going to repost something i wrote a while ago that i find awesome and should be shared with as many people as possible. when i first posted this way back when i started my blog, i got more hits than any other day, and more facebook shares than any other day… so i figure, this is information people actually care about…

as you know, i’m a huge foodie.  i love anything with colour – so basically anything that has been in the ground, grown in soil, rich in nutrients from the earth, fibrous, healthy, and completely natural.  so basically, i am pro-veggie. i firmly believe the human body has the power to heal itself using diet. we truly are what we eat. and when i discovered that some foods actually look like the body parts they help heal, i was floored. talk about intelligent design!  we are truly incredible human machines.

oh and in case you’re wondering what my stance is after that whole organic vs. conventional stanford study, i don’t care… and i actually didn’t even read it, i don’t need to.  it’s just like when they supposedly found this brand new thirteenth astrological sign suddenly – what was his name? whatever, it doesn’t matter. i’m still a sagittarius/scorpio cusp with cancer rising and a capricorn moon, i’m a total product of my natal chart, to a T – some random astronomer isn’t going to come along and suddenly tell me i’m not who i feel i am. and some fancy rich group of college kids isn’t going to come along and change why i eat organic food, either.  {sorry, do i sound snarky?!} Continue reading

{travel tuesday} – it’s 9/11, again : my heart is in NYC today…

11 Sep

i’m just going to keep this simple.

we all know what day it is.  and although i don’t want it to be a somber kind of day, there is always a little bit of that in the air when we reminisce about this day.  and since i have lived here, and walked these streets, a piece of my heart will always be in new york city – on this day and every day.

{wordy wednesday} — leaves of change

5 Sep

i have seriously been sitting at my computer all morning – i started 3 different blogs, got distracted, ate breakfast, cried a little {good cry}, and then started all over.  i blame nicki minaj.  i have been listening to the song “fly” on repeat since i woke up.  it’s my new theme song.  my favourite lyrics :

“Everybody wanna try to box me in
Suffocating every time it locks me in
Paint their own pictures then they crop me in
But I will remain where the top begins
Cause I am not a word, I am not a line
I am not a girl that can ever be defined

I am not fly, I am levitation
I represent an entire generation…” Continue reading

{travel tuesday} — a walk across the williamsburg bridge

4 Sep

about 2 weeks before i left new york city, a friend suggested we take a walk across the williamsburg bridge.  “how often will you get to walk across bridges once you leave?!” she said, convincing me to go. i didn’t need a whole ton of convincing; though at the time i remember feeling really ready to leave new york, and it was hard to drag me out of the house at times… funny how that works, because now i miss the heck out of it! good thing i’m going back for a visit…

there are many messages throughout new york city – stickers, graffiti, signs, posters, strangers yelling things at you, etc.

the williamsburg bridge is no exception.  in fact, i dare to say it boasts the most messages of any place i’ve visited in the big apple.  i mean, the entire bridge is like a graffiti art gallery.  every inch of it is covered with something to see or read.  my camera got quite the workout… Continue reading

{foto friday} — it’s a blue moon!

31 Aug

a blue moon occurs when there are TWO full moons in one month.  we had a full moon on august 1st – {uhm, only the most emotional full moon i’ve been through to date} – and now this evening, we will have another full moon.  it will technically be full in the wee hours of the night, but it ought to be quite the display in the big sky.  last night after i watered the garden, i looked up and saw it.  i ran in to grab my camera, got distracted by my cute cat, only to come back to see that the moon was hiding behind some clouds. some COOL clouds!

i work late tonight, so i probably won’t have time to take photos of the full moon, but i thought i’d share these images from last night – as i precariously stood on a patio chair, nervously gripping my neighbour’s fence in hopes of not falling or shaking too much.  shooting at 1600 ISO is NOT my favourite thing ever.  but, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to get some good shots… Continue reading

{wordless wednesday} – opportunity knocks

29 Aug

i ran out of time to rant and rave this week.  so how about NO words, and my favourite fotographic subjects, instead?!

{foto friday} — east village radio

24 Aug

east village radio.  classic.

one of my former co-workers DJed at this spot once a week.  you can listen live to streaming music on their website.  DJs share a small booth right in manhattan’s lower east side and take up about a 2-hour slot, which varies. my buddy JW likes to spin old-school jams like boyz to men, heavy D, bel biv devoe — take ya back.

one day after work, JW and i were leaving at the same time and he asked if i wanted to come along, since i had my camera at work that day.  heck yes, i’ll snap some photos and sip a red stripe while i listen and watch you play with some old records.  sounds awesome! Continue reading

{travel tuesday} – a sunset in carmel, california

21 Aug

what an absolutely stunning place – carmel, california.  monterey bay is equally as beautiful – they are almost one in the same.

years ago, when i was in college, i went to visit my dad in san jose, california – also beautiful, and also will be a blog post at some point – and i took lots and lots of drives along the pacific.  only twice now have i ever been to that region… but i tried to soak up as much as possible with each visit – particularly this time since i was studying fotography and wanted to use these images for my portfolio.  and i did – this one :

i am so thankful i got to visit this wonderful place… i miss the ocean a lot since moving back to colorado.  i’ve always been so drawn to it, to the water. i love the sound of the waves, the smell of the ocean air, the breeze from off the shoreline… mmm, i miss it.  the pacific ocean is pretty different than the atlantic, though… and i’m way more used to the atlantic.  if i remember correctly, i was surprised at how much cooler the water temps in the pacific were…

i digress.

here are some shots from that brisk may sunset in carmel : Continue reading

{travel tuesday} – atop the metropolitan museum of art, NYC

14 Aug

this was hands-down one of the most romantic nights of my life to date…

the weather was perfect.  i believe it was right around this time of year… i was on one of the best dates i’ve ever been on in my life — and it started with an amazing dinner at an amazing restaurant – i remember using the word “enamored” several times to describe the food…

then we went to an exhibit on top of the metropolitan museum of art… it was incredible… the view was something like this : Continue reading

{travel tuesday} – the famous brooklyn bridge

7 Aug

the BB was always a place i would take visitors.  for one, it’s just classic cool. for two, it’s great exercise to walk it.  and for three, it was close to my apartment.

these photos are from two different visits to the brooklyn bridge.  both times i walked the entire length of the bridge into brooklyn from downtown manhattan.  it’s a great walk, a cool chance to see so much of both boroughs from a unique perspective.  a lot of times, when i had a guest in town – i’d show them the brooklyn bridge, then i’d take them across the staten island ferry, for a chance to see even more of the city from another perspective. i’ve probably walked the brooklyn bridge at lease half a dozen times now…

so, without further ado, here are some photos for travel tuesday… another snippet from my life in new york : Continue reading

travel tuesday – union square street artist Joe Mangrum

31 Jul

one time, when i lived in new york – a very nice colleague and friend of mine let me borrow his brand new canon camera and take it out on the town.  i went shopping with some friends and then later cruised through union square to see the haps.  never a dull moment on any given street in manhattan, but i loved going to USQ because there was the farmers market, the shops, the arts, the people, and the chess-players. and, lots of awesome randomness to stumble upon.

this day was when i met Joe Mangrum, an NYC legend in street art.  Joe is most known for his beautiful, unique and colourful sand art.  most commonly done in USQ, Joe gets out into the streets and does his thing – small or large crowd, rain or shine alike.  he is one friendly dude, too!

here are a few shots i snapped while watching him work : Continue reading

foto friday – manhattan henge

27 Jul

so – right around this time of year – and i think once again near the winter, the sun is positioned just right in the sky, and at sunset – it passes through the main strips in manhattan {14th street, 34th street, 42nd street}, illuminating the streets and causing intense building shadows and traffic to literally stop.

i had heard of this event thanks to my friend anthony.  it is aptly referred to as, “manhattan henge” {like stonehenge} because it does create this fantastic contrast and to be frank, it’s not often the city gets that drenched with light, so people flock to it!

i set out on the M15 bus uptown and stopped at 42nd street on the east side and started walking west… Continue reading

travel tuesday – flying over the island

24 Jul

depending on which airport you fly into in new york, where you are flying from, and the time of day – one can get the coolest view of the city from above – a rare opportunity to look at the entire scope of new york city, and almost catch a glimpse at all 5 boroughs…

i love this photo because you can see my old apartment to the right, just past the bridge…

audrey michelle’s colourful DIY cleanse – DAY #4

19 Jul

today was rough, i will admit that. and i think this photo shows it  – maybe i should’ve photoshopped the bags from under my eyes – hA!  oh well, i’m an honest person – this is how i look and feel on a 5-day DIY cleanse i randomly decided to do and invent 😉

today was harder than yesterday.  but it makes sense now – after i did a ton of research on cleansing and symptoms.  see, this is how i roll – i just wing it… whatever “it” is.  sometimes it works out, sometimes i learn a valuable lesson the hard way, meh.  anyway – i was super nervous about how i was feeling today… mostly because i was unsure if it was “normal,” if you will. and plus, i was abruptly awoken this morning and couldn’t get back to sleep, so i knew i’d be a little irritable, but i worried i was doing more damage than good with this cleanse…

until google clarified it all… Continue reading

audrey michelle’s colourful DIY cleanse – DAY #3

18 Jul

today was different.

i definitely felt the cleanse, or my body detoxing slightly, or the odd sleeping, or something.  something was different.  i don’t feel bad per se, i just feel different.  my head is much more clear, as in not cluttered with stupid thoughts or particularly, anxious ones.  which is good!  mostly i feel a little sluggish, surprisingly, and my head {although clear} feels kind of weird. maybe it’s because it’s clearer, don’t know – but i feel different.

i have been dreaming of food, however.  hAhA! i think last night i dreamt of pizza – no joke. i was browsing the food section on WP late at night, i’m sure that didn’t help – hA.  a reader asked me if was craving anything in particular, and i will say that today i did notice i was missing carbs, starch, etc.  so i made potatoes with dinner, which seemed to scratch that itch – for now.

here’s how the menu went today : Continue reading

{the foto} missing coney island

18 Jul

i mean, seriously – nothing says summer in new york like a trip to coney island in brooklyn.  a dear friend and follower of the blog, anthony, took me to the coney island circus one time.  it was one of my only trips to coney island, since it was quite a hike from where i lived in manhattan. there’s such an old charm about that place.  the games, the “carnival” feel, the boardwalk, the old rides, etc.  so much history.  anthony is a superb tour-guide, he told me and showed me so many great little secrets hiding in that great city.

a few of my favourite captures from that day : Continue reading
